06 GROWING GREEN CORRIDORStudio
2022 FALL STUDIO BOAVISTA URBAN AREA
Rhode Island School of Design
Instructor: Jonathan Knowles
Individual Work
The task is to create a proposal for the revitalization of the Boavista Landfill urban area in Lisbon. It is located in the center-west of Portugal, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. This renovated project consists of an 8-story residential building with an additional underground parking floor, a 3-story cultural video library with continuing double-arch entrances, and a landscape interconnecting the two buildings.
The project aims to create a fantasy tree-like architecture that grows from the site and vividly radiates to the entire city, with integrated internal green social corridors, and external greenery balcony corridors. It is a prefabricated wooden building with an organic-shaped screen wall that waves around the traditional ceramic-tile facade to create the ideal tree dynamically. It is structurally supported by a huge concrete base. The entire mechanical system of each floor would run from the central concrete columns, just as branches grow from the trunk.
