2021 FALL STUDIO URBAN ECOLOGIES
Rhode Island School of Design
Instructor: Manuel Cordero Alvarado
Collaborative Work
This Urban Ecologies project is an affordable, mixed-use housing renovation that creates a full food-waste cycle for the public to experience. The sequential experience of the project mimics the process of food being grown, processed, cooked, eaten, and composted.

Located in the Providence West End, this housing project is based on the adaptive reuse of an abandoned factory. Residents here make a living through operating the community gardens and food market, which are the components of such a sequential experience. The integration of housing enables the project to incorporate three scales of cooking with varying degrees of public to private, as well as challenge the traditional conception of cooking as a behind-the-scenes action. Instead, the idea of a kitchen island operates across scales to acknowledge and credit the labor being put into the production of food.
